Karthigai Deepam Recipes | கார்த்திகை தீப விழா சமையல் வகைகள்

Karthigai Deepam - festival of lights, a very popular South-Indian Festival falls on the Tamil month of Karthigai on a Pournami day(full moon day). This year(2015) Karthigai Deepam falls on Wednesday, 25th November. Lamps lit with oil are a symbol of holiness in Indian culture. Throughout this month, beautifully lit lamps are found all around the home to bring in happiness to the home.
This is the most significant festival that is celebrated with pomp and gaiety at Arunachaleswarar temple, Thiruvannamalai. It is celebrated as a ten day festival and it is widely known as Karthigai Brahmotsavam. The idea behind this festival is to keep away bad things from life and welcome the good and holy things of life.

Lord Muruga took the form of six babies in a lake called "Saravana Poigai". On this day, all his six forms were united by Parvathi(his mother) and this way, he had six faces. Special poojas are performed to Lord Muruga. It is also called as ‘Thirukarthigai’ and celebrated to commemorate the birth of Lord Muruga.

On the Thirukarthigai day, the entire house is decorated with flat earthen oil lamps (Agal Vilakku). They light large number of lamps and arrange it on the Kolams drawn in front of the house. The lamps are also kept in a row on the balconies, staircases, near the door entrance, windows, all over the floors and wherever people find place in and around their houses.
