Gooseberry Rice | நெல்லிக்காய் சாதம் | Nellikkai Sadham | Amla Rice

Amla/Gooseberry rice is an extremely effective super food as amla is loaded with health benefits. This is rich in vitamin C and is a good remedy for cold. This recipe helps to incorporate the goodness of amla in our daily diet to maintain good health.
Amla/Gooseberry/Nellikai is tart, light green to yellow fruit  well known in Ayurvedic traditions as an antioxidant. It contains twenty times the vitamin C in oranges. It also supports the heart, strengthens the lungs, regulates elimination of free radicals, enhances fertility, helps the urinary system, increases skin health, promotes healthier hair, acts as a body coolant, flushes out toxins, increases vitality, strengthens eyes and improves muscle tone.

Ingredients :-
 Cooked Rice    1 cup
 Gooseberry/Amla/Nellikai   ¼ cup*
 Turmeric powder    ¼ tsp
 Cooking Oil    1 tbsp
 Sesame Oil      1 tsp
 Hing pinch
 Onion (finely chopped)   ½
 Green chillies   5
 Mustard   ¼ tsp
 Channa dal  ½ tsp
 Urad dal   ½ tsp
 Peanut   2 tbsp
 Salt to taste

Method :-

1). Wash and finely chop/grate the gooseberry. Discard the seeds and keep it aside. Cook rice,
fluff it up with a fork and let it cool. Mix with a tsp of sesame oil with the rice and set aside. You can also use left-over rice for this recipe. Coarsely grind the peanuts and keep aside.
2). Heat oil in a pan and add mustard. When it splutters, add channa dal, urad dal, saute till dals turn golden brown. Then add onions, green chillies and hing, saute till onions turn light brown.
3). Add in gooseberry followed by salt and turmeric. Cook till they turn soft and raw smell of turmeric powder goes away.
4). Then add in the cooked rice and mix gently. Add the coarsely grounded peanuts and toss everything together.
Switch off the flame, check for salt and adjust accordingly.
Enjoy this healthy rice with chips !

Notes :-
# Adjust the gooseberry quantity depending on the sourness.
# Instead of coarsely grinding the peanuts, you can use whole peanuts. Add it while adding the dals in the first step.
